We have a 1 year old!!

    It is hard to believe that Jace is one! I can't believe how fast the time has gone. I do think that living with Paul rather than apart from him has contributed to the speed of time. A little update on Jace: He isn't walking independently yet. He loves to speed crawl all over the place and walk holding on to things, but the little stinker just doesn't care enough to try it on his own. He had a lip tie and tongue tie revised a few weeks ago and has been not quite as friendly with strangers as he was before the procedure. Hopefully he will over come this phase or we will have long days ahead of us. He loves to play with cars, and basically that was his first word. Kah! he says and points to his cars. He also loves to play with daddy's basketball and soccer ball. He hasn't tried to say ball yet, but he always points to them when they are out of reach, and attempts to dribble the basketball when it is in reach. We are in a picky eater phase. He used to gobble up nearly everything, now its a hit and a miss with what he likes, even if he liked it before, there is no guarantee he will like it today. He hates it when Daddy leaves for the day, and usually makes me take him up to the garage so he can watch Daddy leave. But he also loves it when Daddy comes home. When he hears the door close, his ears perk up and he usually makes a beeline for the stairs to go greet Dad. I can still get Jace to take 2 naps, but I think its mostly because he doesn't sleep as long as most kids during the night. He gets 10 hours of sleep and is up for the day. But I will admit I do like having those two times during the day where I am awake and can actually take advantage of the time he is sleeping. He weighs 20 lbs 14 oz. and I guess he is now in the 20th percentile for height, weight and head circumference. He hasn't even gained a full pound since his 9 month checkup, but I think thats mostly because he has slimmed out a ton from crawling all of the place and being so active. He has 6 great big chompers in his mouth, and the looks of a few more coming soon. He loves to give kisses and has started making an attachment to a blanket and a stuffed animal. Its super cute. Jace keeps us on our toes and we love him to death!!

      The week of Jace's birthday was quite fun. Paul took Thursday and Friday off to spend some time with us. On Thursday, we went to the aquarium for Jace's birthday. We went with Paul's brother Eric, and their family. It was a hoot to have the nephews with us. Jace is at the age where he actually looks at the fish, and animals around him, so it was fun to see his reaction. He wasn't particularly keen on putting his arm in the cold water to pet the stingray, but he did it anyway. It was so cute to see his eyes go back and forth as the fish and jelly fish swam back and forth in their tanks. I am excited to see what he thinks of the zoo again the next time we go.
    Sage and Milo were so cute also. Sage was SO excited about everything! He was running wild all over the place and we were having a hard time keeping up with him! Milo was just as curious about everything. They all especially loved seeing the sharks! Man, that shark tank is so cool! I love how it is a tunnel and you can walk underneath it, and see the animals swimming all over the place! Pretty sure we stayed in the shark tunnel for a good 30 minutes!
     After the aquarium we made a stop at home, I went and tutored, and then we went out to dinner. Paul's work told him that he could take me out to dinner on them because he did such a fabulous job with one of their bigger audits. So we got to take Jace out to a pretty nice birthday dinner. I am sure we enjoyed it far more than he did, but thats ok!

Seeing the turtles up close was so fun! This turtle in particular has an air bubble in her shell so she has a weight pack on her back to help her butt sink. As you can tell it still likes to float up. 

When we visited the penguins, they weren't very active. They were all just napping!! But Jace thought it was fun to grab the beak of one of the penguin posters. 

It was really cute to see Paul take Jace across the rope bridge! I feel like a lot of the daily adventures Jace and I have are without Paul because he is at work. But it was really nice to have him with us this time!

Jace has developed a LOVE for driving the car. Whenever we walk out to the garage he always points his cute little finger at the car and says kah! and keeps pointing until we take him over to the car. He loves both standing in the drivers seat, or playing in the passenger seat. As long has he can turn the steering wheel or reach the buttons, he is a happy camper!

     Paul took Friday off of work as well. We used that day to get everything all put together for Jace's party. We ran some errands, and we went out to lunch together as a family. And we spent the rest of the evening putting food together for Saturday's party.
    For some crazy reason I couldn't sleep Friday night. I think I was just too excited about Jace's party. Yeah, it was weird to be sleepless over my baby's birthday, nevertheless I was. I was definitely tired Saturday, but I made it through without being too grumpy or cranky.
    Lisa Walters and her fiance Matt met us at the temple early Saturday to do sealings. I had called 4 or so days before to make an appointment so we could get in and out with enough time to finish prepping for Jace's party. When we got to the temple, they told us that they didn't have an appointment for us and that they were crazy busy with weddings. I heard this and just got so stressed out. We were on a time constraint and they didn't even have us penciled in! One of the temple workers asked if we wanted to sit in the celestial room and after 10 or so minutes check back in with them. We decided to go and sit in the celestial room. Paul was just enjoying himself calmly taking everything in, and I was trying so hard to not be stressed about getting home in time. I finally started to relax and the temple worker came to get us and tell us that they were able to work something out. They ended up having a few workers that had a few extra minutes before they had a marriage. We didn't have lots of time with them in the sealing room, but that was just what we needed. The sealers had to be at a wedding at the same time we needed to leave to get home. The Lord was definitely watching over us, and made sure that we were able to go to the temple, but still make it to what we needed to with enough time.
     As soon as we got home we got right to work getting the rest of Jace's party all set up. Thankfully we had some family members that came over early to help so we could get everything all set up in time. We had lots of fun with all of our family members and friends that came to celebrate Jace's first birthday. Paul would say that I went overboard, and maybe I might have just a little, but his first birthday was everything that I hoped it would be, so I am happy and satisfied!

Jace loves his books so I thought it would be fun to do a story book themed birthday party. That way guests didn't feel like they had to buy him some crazy gift, they could get a book for him new or used if they wanted to. It worked out really well. It wasn't quite as extravagant as some of the parties you might find on Pintrest, but everything turned out super cute! This is the food spread, minus the pigs in a blanket and green eggs with no ham. :)

Here is the cute cake table with the birthday banner. And yes, those are weights used to hold the sheet up to create a back drop. We aren't professionals here, we had to work with what we had :)

This is Jace's fun smash cake. The frosting had a few issues, and Paul did a jolly job and scraping a chunk off the back, but you definitely can't tell from this angle. For my first try piping frosting, I think it turned out pretty ok thanks to all those Pintrest tutorials!

He was seriously so excited about his books. I bet he would have been just as excited with toys, but the teacher in me was so glad that he just loved the books he got.

Now he wasn't too thrilled that we took him away from his presents to eat cake. He cried the first little bit. 

Sadly, this is about as intense as it got for his cake. Jace didn't really get into it quite as much as some other kids do. But he did try, and that was cute I though. He sort of poked the cake with one finger rather than getting all of his hands dirty. Paul ended up smashing his little hands into the cake to see if he would get a little more into, which he didn't. But thats ok!

This was the party that happened after the party! Both boys went down for naps, and I spent a few minutes picking up, then took a nap myself! It was a long day, but so worth it. We loved having all of our family and friends over to celebrate Jace's birthday. 

11 Months already?!?

     I seriously can't believe that little Jace boy is 11 months old already. Its so fun to see his little personality taking shape. For 11 months I will try so hard to come up with 11 fun things to share about Jace.

    Eating

Jace is usually pretty good about eating, but he did go through a rather picky eater phase. He is slowly starting to come out of it. But we have learned that if it is something sticky, squishy, or weirdly textured, you have to put it in a bowl on Jace's tray or else it goes on the floor before he ever puts it in his mouth. 

    Milk

Jace just kind of doesn't really like milk very much. He is still breastfeeding, but that is the only milk I can get him to drink. I have tried mixing whole milk with breast milk and he will sip-sip it here and there. But he doesn't particularly care for it. I have tried giving him just whole milk. He gives me weird looks. I have tried giving him mixtures of breast milk and formula, formula and whole milk, and even trying to just seriously dilute milk or formula so its super watery, (because Jace LOVES water). but nothing works. He is too smart. I hope that I can figure out how to get him how to drink milk. I don't want to breast feed him forever!

Bottles

Jace hates bottles! I can't get him to take a bottle to save his life! He used to drink out of them all the time, no problem. Now he absolutely refuses to take a bottle. He throws them on the floor, or if he is sitting on the floor with a bottle he pushes it as far away from him as he can and gives me dirty looks. Even putting juice in them hasn't worked to get him to try and drink from one. He is really good at using a sippy cup, but I was hoping to keep milk in a bottle and water in a sippy. Good thing I am flexible.

Binkies

Jace loves his bink. He can fall asleep with out it, but he is not very happy about it at all. I don't like him to have his binky in all day so I take it away from him once he wakes up. But he has taken a liking to his old binkies that he hated before and uses them during the day when he doesn't get his nap time binky. Its funny to see him switch between 3 different kinds of binkies throughout the day while he plays with his toys.

Cars

Jace has taken a liking to cars this past month. He could play with them before, but now he is even making car noises. He pushes them around the floor and grunts, (that how is makes car sounds). I have showed him how to make nrrrr noises, but they still come out like grunts. Its so cute!

Singing

Jace has started singing. When there is a song on, or when we sing a hymn in church, Jace starts to babble out loud, but he also changes the pitch of his voice to sound like he is singing. Paul is musically talented so I can't say I am surprised, but I hope that as much as Jace likes singing, he will like sports too.

Dancing

Jace used to dance to music before, but he has gotten much better at it over the past month. Before he would just wave his hands in the air to the beat of the music. Now he moves his body and sways to the music as well as waving his hands.

Walking

Jace is still not walking. He is so fast at crawling that I think he doesn't feel the need try and walk. He is so fast at walking along the edge of furniture, or pushing the laundry basket across the floor, but when it comes to him standing on his own, he sits right down on his bum and gets mad. His younger cousin has already started walking, and I am hoping that she will be a good influence on him, and at least get him to try and stand on his own.

Sign Language/Talking

Jace is still using sign language. We don't have a massively huge vocabulary, but he is pretty good at the ones we have practices. Just a few days ago he started nodding his head yes. I think it means yes, but I am not quite positive. No actual words I don't think. He does say something that sounds so much like the word "more" and he usually says it while he signs more, but I can't decide if it really means more or not. Jace LOVES to give kisses. He can't blow kisses yet, but if you say kisses, he walks up to you and puts his whole mouth over your lips! Its actually kind of cute. He hasn't figured out how to pucker his lips yet, so every kiss is a slobbery one. Sometimes he will actually initiate the kiss himself. I just love it when he walks up to me and plants a wet one all over my face. It makes my day for sure.

Books

Jace still just loves his books. He has a basket of books that I let him play with every day, and we have a bookshelf that we pick a book from every day and read it. He is starting to learn what all of the books say, I think. Of course, I have all of his board books memorized basically word for word since I read them so much, so I will start to say the words to one of his books and he actually goes and pulls that specific book out of his basket and looks at the pictures! He is almost to the point where he will sit through almost an entire book and listen to it.

Dirt!
Jace loves dirt. I can't say I am surprised, but he has already eaten way to much of it in his short life. I don't get why he thinks dirt tastes better than green beans, but thats his call I suppose. With the weather having been so warm, we go outside and play in the grass occasionally. At first he wasn't quite sure what to think about grass, but now he crawls through it like its nothing. He has been trying so hard to climb up the boulders we have in the rock garden, but hasn't quite figured it out yet. I guess its a good thing he isn't walking because if he was I am sure he would be in the flower beds and everything!

     It really is so crazy to think that Jace is almost a year old. When he was born he had blue eyes. I have been keeping and eye on them for the past 11 months secretly hoping he would get green eyes like me. I can't tell for sure, but I think he might actually end up with green eyes. I haven't gotten a super good look at them, because usually I remember to look when he is in a grumpy mood, but I hope that it won't disappoint next time I get a really good look.

Jace was practicing wearing his baseball hat. He used to love hats. But now he is always pulling off what ever is on his head. I have found that if I can get him to leave the hat alone, and distract him for about 2 minutes, he forgets its on his head and leaves it there. So every once in a while we practice. 

Our awesome friends from Cedar City made these blocks for Jace. They have been in the closet until now. I feel like he is finally old enough to enjoy them. He had a lot of fun eating them and throwing them all over the floor. 

Can't get this kid to eat green beans, but he will eat dirt no problem. I turned my back for just 10 seconds, and he had a huge mouthful from outside. I just love this picture. He totally is giving the camera the stink eye!! 

We don't have one of those walker toys, that is something I should probably invest in, but since I don't have one yet,  Jace is finding all sorts of objects to help him get around. Today it was the 5 gallon bucket. 

The bucket started to be more than a walker as Jace started to collect things in it. If only I could get him to pick up the trash of the floor... Actually he was putting his toys in there. So thats not bad I guess. He picks them up off the floor and puts them in a bucket, then I just have to dump the bucket in his toy bin. Not a bad set up I suppose. 

I stole his football to try and get a picture of his face. It didn't work out quite as well has I had hoped. 

Nana Susan has this blue plastic purse that she found in her car. Jace absolutely loves to play with it. I will look over and he will have the little handle of this purse sticking out of his mouth. He has never tried to eat it thankfully. It just sits there in his mouth with the handle sticking out. Silly kid!

Bath time = fun time. Jace loves baths. And I just love how cute his little eye lashes look when they are all wet. 

He is attached to that crab. Any time he is in the tub, that crab is either in his hand, in his mouth, or sitting on the side of the tub right where he can reach it. 

Easters 2015

     This year was Jace's first easter. He was almost old enough to enjoy it I think! The Easter Bunny brought him a few things, and his favorites were his cars, and his dum-dum suckers. We have been keeping most things pretty low key around here. "It all adds up" says Paul. Since we are saving for a house, we are really trying to keep our spending down so we can save a little more. But we still had a pretty good easter!
    We went to the Burnett's for breakfast on Sunday, and had a nice big breakfast with all of Paul's brothers, and their wives. After breakfast we were told that the "Easter Bunny" had come and hidden a basket for everyone and we had to find ours. Paul's dad loves Easter, and just LOVES watching all of us search the house to try and find our baskets. They get hidden REALLY well at the Burnett house. Usually I am the last one to find my basket, but somehow I found mine before Paul and half the other guys!! There were also a few plastic eggs outside for the grandkids to find. Jace seemed to have fun crawling to the eggs in the grass and then popping them open to attempt to eat the candy inside.
    The rest of the day was pretty relaxed. We watched conference at the in-laws, dyed some easter eggs in between sessions, then went to my parents for the second session of conference, and for dinner. After conference, we had a mega egg hunt at my parents. We told my dad to hide the eggs hard for adults, and then sent Paul in the opposite direction to hide some eggs my dad would have to find! It took us a while but we found all of the eggs but one. While we were outside playing Kub, Yulia managed to find the missing egg. I think my parents were especially grateful to not have a stinking, rotting egg in a few days.
     The rest of the evening was mostly spent relaxing and playing games as a family. Paul and I headed home after a while and went to bed. We have been so busy, (and when I say we, I mostly mean Paul), at our house lately that we don't spend a whole lot of time together. But it was nice this weekend to have Paul around and not busy with work. Busy season is almost coming to a close. I am almost counting down the days until it does!

Jace just loves the easter eggs! There was just a few pieces of candy in there so it would make noise. He LOVED to shake those eggs! But once he figured out how to open them, Paul and I had to keep a close eye on him so he didn't eat the Candy inside. 

Of the 30+ pictures we took of Jace for Easter, this is the only one where he is almost kind of looking at the camera.

Hiking Donut Falls

     For Christmas Paul's parents gave us a really nice hiking carrier for Jace. Ever since then I have been dying to get outside and use it. I have been using it here and there when I run on the elliptical with Jace on my back, but I really wanted to do some actual hiking. Finally the weather has been consistently warm enough, and our schedules have been open enough that we decided to go hiking this past Saturday.
     Paul wanted to go in the morning before it got too crazy busy, but I convinced him that it was still spring and we needed it to be warm enough outside to take Jace out and hike. Its kind of awesome that we live literally right at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon. Our drive up the canyon was probably less than 10 minutes! We parked as close to the trailhead as we could, but the road to the actual donut falls trailhead is still closed off to cars for winter still. So we had to walk up the road a ways before we could start the hike. Halfway up we hit snow! We weren't even on the trail yet and we were walking through snow. We decided that it couldn't hurt to keep going and see how far we could get.
     We made it to the trailhead and Jace started to get fussy. I was a little bummed because we were just getting ready to start and we potentially had to turn around and head home. Luckily we had animal crackers! I just had to hand one to Jace every 3 minutes or so to keep him occupied and he was just dandy.
    Just before the falls the trail goes downhill at a pretty steep rate. With the trail being covered in snow, and having been frequently traveled, this downhill portion of the trail was basically an ice slide. Paul made it down with the baby pretty quickly. I had shoes with zero traction so I was slipping and sliding like crazy, (I was super grateful at this point that Paul was carrying the baby and not me). I found some rock and branches on the side of the trail that I basically used to boulder down the side rather than slip and slide down. We both made it to the bottom and only had a few more twistys and turnys to go before the falls.
     When we got to the actual falls, you couldn't really see them. The snow was covering a lot of the rock so it was hard to really see much of anything other than snow, and rocks. There were lots of people up there just sitting around, but with all of the snow there wasn't an easy place to sit and rest, especially with a baby. So we looked around for a few minutes, took some pictures, then headed back.
     Somehow on the way back we ended up turning and taking a different trail than the original trail that we took to get up to the falls. It still lead us where we wanted to go, it was just a lot of uphill when we were expecting it to be flat. Right near the end Jace started to get fussy again. But we made it to the car without much crying. We had a blast on our hike. Its just a teaser of what will be coming soon! Somehow I have convinced Paul to come on the annual Blatter family backpacking trip. We will be doing 6 days of backpacking to Needle Falls in Montana. I am so stoked! But we definitely need to get into hiking shape!

Alas! We made it to the top! As you can tell, it really doesn't look like a waterfall at the moment.

10 Months and Other Fun Updates

    It is really hard to believe that another month has come and gone already. I really wanted to be one of those on top of it blogger moms that does a fantastic job keeping everyone up to date. But I am failing just a little bit. For now, I at least get a monthly post in. But when Jace turns 1 I have a feeling I might slack off a little bit. I guess we will find out.
    10 months for Jace hasn't been anything crazy or special. We are still doing the same old same old. No walking for this guy yet. But I am okay with it for now. :) He is still pulling himself up onto everything and loves to walk along the couch or what ever he is holding onto. He also likes to help me push the laundry basket up and down the halls. But that is about the extent of his walking. We haven't even had any attempts to stand on his own yet. But I am sure he will give it a go when he is ready.
    Jace has been a really good eater until just recently. I finally found something he won't eat. He will not even try canned green beans. I know that I prefer fresh green beans, but I figured that the canned ones would be soft enough for him to eat them. He just squishes them in his hands and then throws them on the floor! He won't even put it in his mouth to try it. He has started to become a texture kid. If it feels weird in his hands, he won't even put it in his mouth. Even if it is something he has had before! I am hoping that its just a phase and he will go back to liking everything. I was a sneaky mom the other day and stuffed green beans and avocado in his raspberries. He ate them right up not a problem! I might just have to be sneaky every now and then!
     He is getting much better at sleeping through the night. We still have issues occasionally, but we are slowly starting to figure it out. No real words yet from this guy, but he says YA like a boss! I am pretty sure its just a sound and doesn't mean anything, but it sure sounds cute when he says YA and I say ya? and he says YA. Jace has gotten really good at throwing his food on the floor. It drives me crazy. If he doesn't want it, on the floor it goes. Or he likes to stick it in his high chair. Silly boy.
    Not a whole lot on the list of new things for this guy. He is just doing his thing and being happy about it. We did take a trip to the zoo with our neighbor friends, and this was the first time he actually looked at the animals. We have a zoo pass and have been in the past, but Jace is actually old enough to notice the animals and want to look at them. It was really fun to see him watch the seals swim by.
      Paul and I just celebrated our 4 year anniversary! Because we are in the midst of his busy season, we didn't get celebrate it on the 12 of march. But we had an extra fun celebration on pi day. We spent the day out having fun. His work rented out a theatre and we got to see the new Cinderella movie, we drove to look at a few new subdivision developments going in, and celebrated by going to the pi, and eating some delicious pie on 3/14/15 at 9:26 pm. It was so silly and really fun!
     Sadly, I think that is the most exciting thing we have done in a while. Paul is so busy with work right now, so we don't get to do a whole lot together. We are just holding out until the summer when we can actually do all of our fun activities that we have planned.

We got a new water heater!! Yay! I was SO excited to have enough water to shave my legs and wash my hair and still have warm water. Jace had a blast playing with the box!

It snowed and I got to use the snow blower since Paul was at work and Susan had foot surgery. I bundled Jace up real good, and strapped him on my back and we used the snow blower for the first time. I definitely need to practice, but I did get the driveway decently cleaned off before Jace got cold, and I got snow blower chute plugged up.

This plastic box kept them occupied for quite a while. I think they could have kept playing in it happily, but I had to take Jace out for some reason.

This is the first time I put Jace in flip flops. It was just too cute to not get a picture of. They only last 10 minutes, but it was so cute!

We went to the park with our amazing neighbor friends. There was only 1 baby swing, and luckily our babies are just small enough that they both fit. If either of them get any bigger they won't, but for now we will take what we can get!

He actually let me do is hair. Usually he won't sit still, and usually it just isn't worth it so its all over the place, but today, it looks cute. 

He didn't like the sticker on his head, but I still managed to sneak a shot. 

The weather was so nice that we had to break out the hammock. Yes, I jinxed the weather and it rained the next day, but we surely loved the sun while we had it!

I asked my father in law to help me with a little wood project for my husband. While I was putting the finishing touches on it, Jace was helping grandpa with some yard work.
